Background
JAR is a goal-based savings fintech startup in India that helps users save money and achieve their financial goals through an intuitive mobile app. The company focuses on making savings accessible and engaging for everyday users
Core problem
The core problem was low referral engagement and slow user acquisition. JAR needed an interactive solution that incentivised users to refer friends whilst operating within a tight two-week deadline. The challenge was designing a referral experience that felt rewarding and engaging, not transactional.
Crafting a User-Centered Approach
We kicked off the project by conducting user research and identifying pain points. The feedback revealed that users struggled with navigation and found the interface overwhelming.
Restructuring the Information Architecture
Collaboration with Product — Aligned on referral mechanics and reward structure within the two-week timeline
Design Exploration — Tested multiple gamification approaches internally to find the simplest solution for development
Developer Partnership — Worked closely with engineers to ensure the game mechanics were technically feasible
Rapid Iteration — Launched quickly and gathered user feedback to refine the experience in real-timer
Enhancing Visual Hierarchy
To improve usability, I employed a minimalistic design with a clear hierarchy. Color coding and typography were used to differentiate between primary and secondary actions.
Designed a color scheme that visually guides the user
Applied consistent typography for clarity across the platform
Integrated subtle animations to highlight transitions and actions

Results and Impact
The gamified referral program significantly increased user participation, resulting in a jump from 4% percent to 16% percent referral conversion rate. The interactive experience made referring friends more rewarding and fun, contributing to stronger user acquisition and positioning JAR as the first fintech to successfully introduce gamification into referrals
